Setting Concepts:
Wars World: Wars World is the planet that Advance Wars is set on, which contains three continents, Macro Land, Cosmo Land and Omega Land, which are largely divided between four superpowers: Orange Star (a United States analogue), Blue Moon (a Russian analogue), Green Earth (a German analogue) and Yellow Comet (a Japanese analogue).
Commanding Officer: Each country has a number of commanding officers (CO's) which can take command of the combined military forces of a nation for various operations. Commanding Officers come from all walks of life but are generally either very talented or very connected (including being the leader of the state, as is the case of Emperor Kanbei of Yellow Comet). Many COs are extraordinarily young.
Allied Nations: The Allied Nations is an alliance of the four superpowers of Wars World formed after the initial invasion of Black Hole in order to facilitate more open communication and cooperation in the face of a new powerful threat.
Black Hole: Black Hole is a mysterious and hostile threat that continues to appear in Wars World. The exact nature of the force has shifted over time as it's leadership continues to change and its methods shift in reaction to the actions of the Allied Nations. It was initially led by the mysterious creature Sturm, before it was deposed by its lieutenant Hawke, and then it was led by Von Bolt (before he was killed, again, by Hawke). One of Black Hole's most prominent CO's, Lash, defected to the Allied Nations at the end of the third invasion. All other Black Hole COs (including Hawke) are still free and presumed dangerous.
Personality:
Sonja is a Commanding Officer and heir to the throne of Yellow Comet. She is a brilliant tactician and intelligence gathering specialist. She is hyper-competent and studious, although she suffers from social anxiety, low self-esteem and bad luck. She is prone to looking at war as a game of strategy, and people as resources, although she has made some progress towards developing empathy and fostering positive personal relationships.
Sonja is guarded, and keeps her cards close to her chest; this is both because she is cautious and perhaps a bit paranoid when it comes to observations and plans, but it also means that if she is wrong, no one will be able to see how foolish she was. Sonja has a tremendous case of Imposter Syndrome, and is constantly afraid that all of her accomplishments and skills so far have been accidents, and that at any moment she'll be revealed as a fraud. Because of this she tends to make a lot of self-deprecating references and has trouble being assertive. This has gotten better in recent times, but she still struggles with it.
Sonja's imposter syndrome is at its worst when Sonja's mind is idle; during times of challenge and crisis, she is extremely competent and efficient. She can put a brilliant plan together at a moments notice, and it's only when the plan has been made and put into action that her self-doubt starts to kick in. Sonja functions best when working with someone that can recognise her patterns, and knows when to stand back and let her work, and when to step in to tell her to stop worrying about things.
Sonja is highly introverted and has trouble making new friends. She clings tightly to the friends she does have, however. Her relationship with Grit goes way back to when she was a child. Grit did a lot of travelling before settling down in Blue Moon, and has friends in lots of places. It was Grit pulling some strings that got Sonja enrolled in Orange Start Academy. Her knack of academics let her advance a year into Sami's class, despite a significant difference of age. Sami and Sonja did not have the best relationship at the beginning of the franchise; Sami thought her a spoiled brat - not inappropriate since Sonja was in the middle of attacking the Orange Star Army on a hunch. Cooperating through three different world wars helped break the ice of the relationship, and the two are on good terms now.
Sonja is constantly irritated by her father, but she loves him immensely. Kanbei is her rock. Her big, dumb rock. While Kanbei has little of intellectual value to contribute to Sonja, he had a great impact on her emotional growth. During a conflict with Adder in the second Black Hole invasion, Sonja's instinct was to abandon a collection of cities which had no strategic value to the war, and were being used by Adder as bait for a trap. Kanbei reminded her that the role of a leader is not to win wars, but to protect their citizens. She took the reprimand to heart, and managed to defeat Adder before he could destroy all the cities.
Sensei is a grandfather figure to Sonja. Sensei and Sonja can spend hours together in quiet silence, both enjoying each other's company. The two of them have an ongoing Shogi rivalry, and at least one game every time Sensei comes by the palace.
After Von Bolt's defeat, Sonja pushed for Lash to be tried for War Crimes. Most of the other CO's were liable to pardon Lash's past deeds because of her aid against Von Bolt. Sonja had an ally in Olaf, whose hometown was personally devastated by Lash in the second Black Hole invasion. A compromise was worked out, putting Lash on community service towards rebuilding the damage done to Omega Land in the wake of Von Bolt's invasion. Sonja, both out of a sense of obligation, and out of confused adolescent hormones, dedicated herself to overseeing Lash's sentence.
Appearance: PB: Inoue Mao. When Sonja is not wearing her military dress, she tends towards simple but fashionable clothing, although she'll be bundling up as much as possible for winter.
Abilities:
While Sonja is trained in hand-to-hand combat and small arms, her strengths are in the war room. She is a brilliant strategist, and specializes in clandestine operations; spreading misinformation, deceiving enemies, gathering and predicting enemy plans and movements, appraising and neutralizing tactical advantages... etc. She is hyper observant and perpetually calculating.
Inventory:
A backpack with a two military history textbooks, a couple of trashy romance novels and a laptop, her smartphone, two encrypted thumbdrives.
Soul Gem:
A yellow locket that opens up to reveal a single comet-shaped fire opal stone. It is lined with elaborate gold etchings.
